Innovations for the Transformation of Access Networks

Launch of the new micro headend OM 20 and the fully-digitalized Value Line amplifier

WISI, a world-leading technology company based in Germany, unveils new, sophisticated video solutions for network operators, service providers and the hospitality industry at ANGA COM 2019 (June 4 – 6) in Cologne (booth R11 in hall 8).

Product highlights include innovative solutions for the DAA-transition, the new micro headend OM 20, new amplifiers from WISI’s Value Line and the expansion of the optical platform OPTOPUS.

Innovative Solutions to Transform Access Networks to Distributed Access Architectures
WISI is excited to present a rich portfolio of systems and components to support the continuing transition of access networks from central to de-centralized architectures or Distributed Access Architecture (DAA). For network operators, this transformation has far-reaching implications and significantly increases network performance. It allows operators to convert transmission technology completely to IP networks. The Converged Interconnection Networks (CIN) provide much higher data rates for these DAA access networks. The highly integrated modular technology (R-PHY) is placed in the node.

Today’s headend technology will increasingly be powered by software that is independent of the hardware and is able to run on COTS servers. Cable operators will have options to place headend technology into data centers and virtualize their networks. In addition to DAA, virtualization is the next evolutionary step that is transferred to the access area after deployment in the core networks. This applies for all next-generation access networks such as HFC, copper core, fiber and mobile. It is expected that the superior management architecture will be unified by standardized interfaces resulting in a modular network with very little central software components, known as Software Defined Architecture (SDA).

WISI’s versatile solutions for coaxial and optical-based next-generation access networks (10G) will support network operators undergoing this transition to simplify the complexity of their networks while reducing CAPEX and OPEX significantly and exponentially increasing performance. These solutions allow operators to easily summarize network components and use software modules to add new features and change or remove current functionalities. Software-based network architectures today are decreasing operational costs by up to 40 percent and can reduce implementation time of new services from several months to four weeks.

Global launch for micro headend OM 20
WISI’s new micro headend OM20 is a flexible and ideal solution for IPTV applications in hotels, residential networks and other hospitality environments. It can support up to 128 TV channels as IP streams from six DVB-S/S2/S2X transponders. The streams can be fed directly into an IP network and received by IPTV capable devices.

OM 20 has four CI slots for central decryption of Pay TV content. Additionally, the operator can use one smartcard to decrypt services from different transponders. With the OM 20, it’s possible to create a multiplex before the CI slots to combine services from different transponders and decrypt them with just one smartcard. This allows for an efficient use of professional CAMs.

The integrated 4 in 6 switch matrix reduces installation time and is compatible with Unicable II. DiSEqC 1.0 increases the flexibility of the new micro headend and allows control for up to four different satellite positions. In addition, external video content can be ingested as transport streams via USB or a LAN connection. The OM 20 is programmable via an integrated Bluetooth interface and a web interface. M3U playlists are generated automatically.

New fully digitalized Value Line Amplifier
The local feeding VX 26B and the remote powered VX 29B are new amplifiers of WISI’s Value Line for cable networks in the frequency range up to 1.2 GHz. Both amplifiers are programmable via Bluetooth They have an active and a measurement socket on both the input and output. Pluggable modules at the input and output make the new amplifiers perfectly adaptable to different installations. Two diplex filters 65 MHz and 204 MHz and a return path amplifier are integrated. The WISI FlexAccess technology automatically configures the diplex settings remotely or locally via Bluetooth. Auto-alignment ensures the automatic alignment of the amplifier level and sloop parameters selected by the Bluetooth application. ALSC (Automatic Level Slope Control) controls the input signal and realigns the amplifier parameters to ensure a static output level. VX 26B and VX 29B support the upgrade of cable networks to DOCSIS 3.1 without any additional diplex filters and return path modules. With these new amplifiers, operators of cable network infrastructures will experience significant savings in hardware and operational costs.

The optical platform Optopus has been extended by WISI to support CCAP and DOCSIS 3.1. Optopus is a flexible and high-density platform for all types of RF optical networks. The system is designed to be used in any network, such as HFC, RF over Glass and RF Overlay in FTTx applications.

The inverted node LR 44 provides FTTH access through existing HFC plants. The highly integrated components allow the smallest footprint for OBI-free RFoG deployments including optical amplification and high-splitting ratios to connect up to 32 ports. This is enabled by a strengthened, rugged housing that supports installation in harsh environments. LR 44 is fully compliant with the DOCSIS 3.1 specification with up to 1.2 GHz downstream and 204 MHz upstream.

The new desktop RFoG Node LR 11 is a single fiber operation node fully DOCSIS 3.1 compliant, with an upstream of up to 204MHz. It is ideal for FTTH deployments. With its sleek case design, it fits perfectly into any kind of apartment. LR 11 covers typical fiber-to-the-home scenarios and comes with three basic device variants:

- One version includes remote (FSK) switchable upstream frequency limits (between 65 and 204 MHz).
- Two other versions have fixed upstream frequencies, either 65 or 204 MHz.

The optical ALC and its superior features for remote control ensure a smooth rollout and an efficient operational process for all cable network providers.

The LR 10 FTTH platform is a great solution for passive fiber termination, RF Overlay, RFoG and P2P Ethernet. Compared to other termination nodes the LR 10 grows with the needs of the end-customer making the investment more secure from an operator perspective. In its basic form the LR 10 is a simple passive termination node. However, should the need arise, the operator can choose to increase its capabilities to include RF Overlay, RFoG and point-to-point Ethernet.
